I always knew I wanted be in healthcare, but it wasn’t until after a car accident in 1989, where I injured my neck, back and shoulder, that I knew I was going to be a Chiropractor.

18 months after the accident, I hadn’t made much progress with physio, cortisone shots, rehab exercises and medications.  I was getting increasingly frustrated and the pain was really beginning to affect my life.  My sleep was affected, I couldn’t go to the gym and I was constantly tired.  I wasn’t having a great time, at all.

I still remember the morning I was stretching and my neck completely went into spasm.  I had no idea what to do, so of course I called Mom.  Getting sick of me constantly complaining about how much pain I was in, she said, “Would you please go see Dr Buna, my Chiropractor.”  Even though there were Chiropractors all over Victoria, I had no idea what they did.  But I knew I had to do something.

After the most thorough exam any health professional had performed on me, I got my first adjustment.  I could not believe the difference.  For the first time in 18 months, I actually felt relief.  I couldn’t explain why, but I also felt better generally.  Prior to the adjustment, I felt anxious, I felt like I couldn’t get a proper breath.  I would have never guessed that seeing a Chiropractor could make such a difference to how I felt.  After the adjustment, I felt taller, I felt lighter, I felt like I could breathe better and moving without pain was something I had almost forgotten. Most importantly, I felt like there was hope.

Jumping forward to 1997, after 7 years of study, I graduated as a Chiropractor.  It wasn’t easy. At the time I’m sure we all wondered how dissecting cadavers and all those years of late night study was going to make us better Chiropractors.  But it did.  I learned a lot in those 7 years, but realize now that that was just the tip of the iceberg.
